Under the soft light, Daniel was exquisite. His brown hair matched his golden tan perfectly. But he was so serious, his eyes as black as the dead of night, cold grey fear churned in the pit of her stomach.

“You’re in danger, Eva.” He said softly.

“So you expect me to just forget this place?” Her voice cracked. Could she just leave everyone she knew behind? Definitely not.

“Can’t I take anyone else with me?” Eva asked. Michelle wouldn’t cope not knowing whether her daughter was in safe hands or not.

Daniel bowed his head low enough so Eva couldn’t see his eyes. He shook his head.

“Very well then.” He said icily, backing away. “If that’s what you wish, I won’t bother you any more.” He sounded disappointed as he wandered towards the open window.

Before he left, he turned back, looking mildly amused.

“You didn’t think I really attended school, Eva?” He smiled.

“I’m nineteen, I haven’t been in school for a few years now.” He said blankly, implying she was stupid.

  “Where are you going?”

“Back to Tora.” He glanced at her briefly for a moment. “My job is done. I’m no longer needed.”

  “All the best, Eva.”

Daniel pushed open her window and climbed over the ledge. He was so quick, it dawned on her he had probably climbed through windows many times before. As he disappeared into the chilling blistery night in a just a sleeveless sweater, Eva wondered if anything he said was true. She was sad to see him go for some reason, even though he had made her upset. But before she could respond or think how to react, Daniel had already slipped into the darkness.

Would she ever see him again? Her heart sank.

Eva felt numb and quite shaken. But out of all things he’d said, there was one thing that resided with her.

He said she was in danger.
